Verses Poems Quotes Rhymes

but, first...
Welcome
Everyone

I've been writing verses
For 60 years...phew!
And d'yer know why I did it?
T'was especially for you

Jon Bratton

Here's the first of many Special Birthday Verses Poems Quotes
You’re at the big Five-0,

It’s no good saying oh no!

Face it, gravity is winning

Dragging down bits from head to toe.
But hey, here’s how to look young

It’s the eternal secret...no joke

Just hang about with 60 year olds

Or better yet, even older folk
Happy Birthday!

(Kathy), this birthday wish leaves me a tad perplexed

Indeed you may feel yourself a little bit vexed

For my calendar says you’re (sixty seven) today

Don’t worry, I’m ignoring it.. there's just no way

You look so young, vibrant and vivacious too

So it’s obvious to me the calendar’s untrue

Take a black marker pens to any cards that say

The number that’s attached to this birthday

(1952) may be your birth year, as certified

But, today, content yourself the calendar’s lied

Jon Bratton © 2012

You can use the above for any age or you vary the lines in bold as follows

For my calendar says you’ve reached the big Six-O

Don’t worry, I’m ignoring it.. that can't be so

For my calendar says you are (forty) one
Don’t worry, I’m ignoring it..that much time can't have gone

For my calendar says you are (sixty) two
Don’t worry, I’m ignoring it.. that can't be true

For my calendar says you are (forty) three
Don’t worry, I’m ignoring it.. it's lying to me

For my calendar says you are (fifty) four, five or seven today
Don’t worry, I’m ignoring it.. there's just no way

For my calendar says you are (thirty) six
Don’t worry, I’m ignoring it.. it's playing tricks

For my calendar says you are (forty) eight
Don’t worry, I’m ignoring it.. coz you look so great

For my calendar says you are (fifty) nine
Don’t worry, I’m ignoring it.. it's out of line

Special Birthday Verses Poems Quotes

Here's a shorter version of the above poem

My calendar says you’re (forty seven) today

Don’t worry, I’m ignoring it.. there's just no way

You look so young and vivacious too

So it’s obvious to me the calendar’s untrue

(1966) may be your birth year, as certified

Just content yourself the calendar’s lied

So, you young thing
Have a fling
Enjoy
And party hearty

The Landmark Birthdays

Welcome to my Big-0 page which brings you poems and quotes appropriate to the milestone birthdays, the ones that end in a zero or occasionally a five. Most of the sentiments tend to be about the aging process and that opening poem for a 50 year old illustrates it well though it could apply to any landmark birthday beyond say 40. Even at 30 though the sentiments are often about what is to come shortly when
gravity drags down all your bits, time doesn't march, it races
Hair is lost from the head but new hair sprouts in other places

I didn't intend to make that rhyme it just sorta happened. There's nothing wrong with aging

Aging seems to be the only available way to live a long life.

well said Daniel Auber

Here is a sample verse from my
30th Birthday Poems
page

Oh you’ve still got the body of a god
But here’s a thought to make you shudder
You might think you’re now like Zeus
But you'll soon be more like Buddha?

Many people are brought to this Special Birthday Verses, Poems and Quotes page by the search engines when they search for a specific age birthday poem, ages which are not special milestone/landmark birthdays, examples I've seen are 6 year old, seven year old, turning eight, 12th, 13 years old; this latter one is regarded by many as the landmark of becoming a teenager. In response I’ve created pages for young persons birthday poems.
1st Birthday Poems
Younger Persons/Kids Birthday Poems
Sweet 16 Birthday Poems
21st Birthday Poems
Yes, the landmark birthdays start at the 1st, then 5th, 13th, 16th, 18th and 21st. However the older one gets the more expressions there are to reflect the goodhearted but insultingly called decrepitude years of 60th, 65th, 70th, 75th, 80th, 90th, 100th and beyond. I call these Wrinkinsults. The process starts perhaps with the 40th when, if not over the hill, the hill is well in sight and on to the 50th. The turning point from middle age to old age heralds in the hoary years, oft called the silver years to reflect hair color or the golden years of mellowing, having one foot in the grave, growing feeble and embracing agedness. This is the autumn or winter of life, sometimes called the evening of life when senectitude is well entrenched

Special Birthday Verses Poems Quotes

The genarian age names that can be used are as follows. These are all based on correct Latin but only those from Sexagenarian upwards have made it into the dictionary. Ignore your spell checker and use them anyway

Denarian, 10 to 19
Vicenarian, 20 to 29
Tricenarian, 30 to 39
Quadragenarian, 40 to 49
Quinquagenarian, 50-60
Sexagenarian, 60-70
Septuagenarian, 70-80
Octogenarian, 80-90
Nonagenarian, 90-100
Centenarian, 100 to 109.
Supercentenarian, 110 and older

They can be used in a poem for good "showing off" points, for example

Three decades on, and you’re still ticking
The over-the-hill’s in sight but the bucket’s not for kicking
(You continue to give life a whirl
Have a wonderful day, Tricenarian Birthday Girl)
(Having you around, brings so much joy
Have a wonderful day, Tricenarian Birthday Boy)

Who’s now on the fast road to becoming a Quadragenarian

 Special Birthday Verses Poems Quotes

For older people, for example 38th birthday poem may I suggest you go to the bottom of this Special Birthday Verses Poems Quotes page and click on the Birthday Site Map page which shows you all my birthday pages and using that as a hub you’ll find the ideal poem for you, either under general birthday poems or 40th, 50th, 60th where the sentiments ought to be suitable and you can just change the number

Here's a 'getting old' poem that highlights what is fairly typical among such poems, that is, they're from contemporaries who are also aging and feel they 'have the right' to be mischievously insulting/sarcastic

If today on your (XX) birthday
You don't feel quite right.
Coz all those pesky aches and pains
Keep you awake at night.
It's no good going to your doctor
He'll do tests and prescribe some pills
Fully aware (your Medicare) (the National Health),
Will pick up all the bills.

He'll send you to the hospital
Even though you don't feel bad.
He'll want them to give you
Every test they have.
You'll be poked, groped and prodded
Stripped of clothes and dignity
And they'll reach the same conclusion
As has occurred to me

They can do all the tests they want
With results filling an entire page.
And what you have is truly serious and will, one day, kill you;
What you have, buddy, is...
old age.

But hey, don't dwell on it today
Have a good 'un
Tomorrow is soon enough...
...for decrepitude resumption

I've got lots more pages for you to visit but here's a poem by Author Unknown which is on lots of sites but I've adapted it to a completely different poem but expressing the same sentiments

You may be turning (30) (40) (50),
But you really need to know
That during the course of today
Your advancing years won't suddenly show.

Wrinkles won't manifest themselves
You won't develop (30th) birthday dodgy knees
So, OK, time is marching on
But take this birthday comfort please,

Decrepitude won't today descend on you
You won't become a little unsteady
You won't today turn into a wrinkly
I'll break this to you gently... coz you are one, already

But party hearty, if you can manage it
Happy Birthday

Special Birthday Verses Poems Quotes

I've also got lots of useful quotes but here's an example of what you can do rather than just using the quote, or in this case the proverb

"The older the fiddler, the sweeter the tune"
As the English Proverb goes
And you're the sweetest and certaily oldest
Fiddler that I knows

Jon Bratton © 2012

Because today is a landmark birthday
It's insufficient to merely do
The sending of one simple birthday wish
To last not just today but the whole year through.
So on this your (XXth) birthday
You get not one wish but many more
To get you through to this time next year
Here's 364
Have a wonderful birthday
A wonderful year
A wonderful life

Wrinkinsults

As we progress to the even older years let's have more poems for the concept of Wrinkinsults which is a copyrighted concept for wrinklies to send to fellow wrinklies. It is the Baby Boomer generation, the flower power folk of the 1960's who have reached the Wrinkly age and are willing to use Wrinkinsults against their contemporaries..it would be cheeky if young 'uns did it

Here's a Wrinkinsult, again inspired by Clive Whichelow

You were once young and svelte-like
You really were, you know
So give thanks to Mother Nature
Who has made your memory go

Milestone Birthday on this Special Birthday Verses Poems Quotes page 60th Birthday Poem Verse Quote

Congratulations Mummsie
It's time to be running slow
After all, you're now an OAP
Having reached the big Six-O

It's time you put your feet up
To ease arthritic pains
Not lugging heavy luggage
On and off jet aeroplanes

It's time for shawl and slippers
And a touch of blue rinse/bleach
Not lying about half naked
On a foreign holiday beach

But as it's your birthday
You're entitled to get tipsy
A very happy birthday, Mum
You geriatric gypsy

Milestone Birthday Verses, Poems and Quotes continue and some good turning 40 jokes like this next one

(Birthday Poem Verse )

Heartiest congratulations (Name)
On reaching the big (Four)-O
You've had a very hard and gruelling life
And Boy! does it show

So we asked the "Ten Years Younger" lass
If she could see her way clear
To make a programme about you
And I've got her reply right here

(Open envelope as if seeing letter for first time)

Dear Jon
I've studied the pics you sent me
And what is very clear
We're very good at what we do
But we're not that good, dear

There's not enough surgeons in this world
I don't wish to be mean
But have you considered a quick sand blast
Some glue and plasticine

And Jon, please don't read this out aloud
Lest it might offend
Oh! (pause)
Folks let's raise our glasses for a toast
To (Name) our very...very old friend

With advancing years you've gained understanding
That can't be denied
We couldn't have insulted you any more
But believe us, (Name), we tried

Birthday Poem Verse Quote

Don't be ashamed of your age
Don't let the years get you down
That old gang you knew,
they still think of you
As all rounder in your old hometown
Don't mind the gray in your hair
Just think of all the fun you had puttin' it there
And as for that old book of time,
boy, you never skipped a page
So don't be ashamed of your age
Brother, don't be ashamed of your age
And now listen Mr. Smith and Mr. Brown
Don't let the years get you down
'Cause life ain't begun, until you're forty, son
That's when you really start to go uptown
And don't wish that you were a lad
While boy, you've lost the old girls they've ever had
And what's more, you've graduated from that old sucker stage
So don't be ashamed of your age Brother,
don't be ashamed of your age

Rhymes for those attaining a milestone age

There's even mawesome!
The words thirty, forty, fifty etc...are not good for rhyming but when used as "the big three-O", "four-O", "five-O" and so on, the rhyming possibilities greatly increase. The -oe- sound has lots of simple rhyming words/expressions like ago, get-up-and-go, from-top-to-toe, show, slow and so on

More poems for those attaining a milestone age birthday

Congratulations, Billy
You've reached the big "Four-O"
You were born in the last millennium
So that's a long, long time ago

While on numbers, it is useful to use, for example, 39 for anyone over 40:-

Happy Birthday (Billy)
And my, don't you look fine
Given your advancing years
Fast approaching 39

Or

You've outgrown my lap, but not my heart
O (Maureen) daughter of mine
Growing up's for trees, so why not stay
Forever 39

Or use the same approach for, not just the recipient's age but the sender's, as well:-

You're (24) already, (son)
Nearly over the hill, oh my
And as you face advancing years
Unfortunately, so do I

So let's make a deal together
We'll use the same party line
You're a smidgin' over 21
(You're a little under 21)
I'm a tad over 39
(I'm not quite 39)

And bringing Granny into the ruse

I heard about your mother's deal
I'll go along with it, that's fine
Now, raise your arm and swear this oath
"My Grandma's 59"
