Memorial Poem to Dad

by Gill West
(Kent, UK)

Funeral Poems to Family Members
Written in memory of my dear Dad who passed away some years ago but have shared with many friends over the years in their times of sorrow.

Memories

It's hard to find the words to say
Exactly how I feel
Sometimes when sad I shed a tear
But know that time will heal

It wasn't very long ago
That I could talk to you
We'd share a joke, a worry too
We'd know just what to do

I can't imagine where you are
But hope it's somewhere calm
Away from fear, no pain or hurt
Quite safe from any harm

I want to say I miss you
Because you can't be here
But then I know you're in my heart
Those memories are so dear

Goodnight, God bless, I won't forget
Your face, your smile, your touch
To know that you are now at peace
Will always mean so much

Grandpa i love you and miss you,I sit here and think why Grandma would tell you to go to the light...I was mad when i found out but now i know why she told you that because you were in so much pain i thought you better, but God took you and we needed you the most too.

Christian Funeral or Memorial

by Lynnette Haralampopoulo
(Toronto, Ontario, Canada)

All things in this world have a beginning and an end. Man is born and man dies. In this reality of things, God intervenes. He becomes man, he is born in Bethlehem and he dies on the cross. But then he resurrects; he reminds humans we are not just another part of his creation. Yes, we have a beginning and an end on earth but we are created in his image and likeness. Death is not the end but the beginning of eternity. Christ invites us to live in a way that will lead us to eternal happiness with him.

We use the word "end" to describe death. In Greek "end" translates as "goal" or "purpose". The end of a human life means the person reached his or her goal of existence. And the goal of our existence, of our life, is eternity with our Creator.

Today we honor the life and unification of ......with his/her creator.

Funeral Poem-a Tribute

by emma miles
(uk)

Funeral Poems for Family Members
Verse written, with little help, for my husbands nan

How do we let a mother go?
How do we say "I'm ready now to go on without you"?
How can we ever have a clue of what that really means?
And of a sudden the moment is upon us, and there's no turning back.
And then we know what grief is,... and guilt and love and things undone.
Try to prepare and we will fail in some way, be it subtle or looming....

But there is peace too. peace and acceptance and overwhelming love that we maybe
weren't aware of. waves and waves of conflicting emotion, And laughter too,
and memories we hadn't bothered lately to recall come flooding back in shared
company.. and it's all about you
And there's gratitude.. so much of that, that we had you, such a wonderful mother...
Bright and shining, nobody's fool, independent, but humble too;
Smart, and kind, and fun.
Adventurous..
A part of you has passed away, but much is carried everyday within us, and will as
long as we are here.

This may be a final tribute,
A day to celebrate your life and say goodbyes;
But it's not final.
Every day I'll celebrate in some way, just by the virtue of how you shaped my life,
The absolute and incredible fortune that I knew you.
As a mother, nan, sister, a friend, a woman

JOURNEY, Funeral Sentiments

by Val
(Lincoln, UK)

Funeral Poems for Family Members

I'm going on a journey,
down the road that links the future to the past
and the only load I carry
is the love I bear for those I leave behind.
I take with me the memories
of a life I filled with laughter and with joy,
and I'm following a path
that leads to places only pictured in my mind.
And all I ask of you is that you miss me,
just a little, now and then,
but laugh when you speak of me
as you would if talking of an absent friend,
and know that I'll be waiting
if it takes until the stars begin to fall,
when you walk the road that I took
walk fast...and I'll be waiting at the end.

Poem for a Fathers Funeral

by Cliff Sargeant

Funeral Poems for Family Members
My father died recently and I could not find a suitable poem to read for him at his cremation that reflected what I wanted to say, so I wrote my own.

THAT MAN

When I was born that man was there,
Tall and strong and fair of hair.
He watched my mother give me birth,
As I fought my way onto this Earth.

That man would rock me off to sleep,
Would wipe my tears when I did weep.
He watched me go from crawl to walk,
And smiled with pride when I learned to talk.

That man taught me to ride a bike,
And even how to fly a kite.
He taught me to know wrong from right,
When to run and when to fight.

That man was made of many parts,
A teacher of lifes skills and arts.
Full of love and full of care,
With much to give, and much to share.

As I grew older so did he,
But that man was always there for me.
His love, unspoken, but strong and clear,
Of that I have no doubt or fear.

Time passed, that man grew old and frail,
No longer strong, but weak and pale.
Now I helped him, as he'd helped me
A debt to repay, no charge, no fee.

And now that man has left this life,
No longer parted from his wife
Memories are all that we have left
Of that man who was the best.

Who was that man, you may well ask?
To tell you now is my last task.
It makes me proud, it makes me glad,
To tell you that man, he was my dad.

Webmaster: Although written for Cliff's dad it could have been for almost everyone's. I have no doubt that this will be used often..won't that make Cliff's dad "smile with pride"

I'm not the only son to have lost a mum

by Nigel S. Williams
(London)

Funeral Poems for Family Members
Dedicated to and in remembrance of my mum
who passed away on 6.9.2009

I know I'm not the first nor the last
To have a parent pass,
But when this son lost his mum,
Life itself became numb
And I couldn't talk to anyone.
Gone was the only one
Who could say don't worry son
And make me believe
Better times were to come.

I give thanks to family and friends
Who tried their best
To comfort me
Through this difficult test,
But "sorry for your loss",
Lost meaning with time,
And no I'll never be fine.

You see no amount of time
Can drive those memories from my mind
Of all the good times mum and I shared
And how she always so unselfishly cared.

An angel on Earth is what she was,
And what she's gone to be,
But most importantly to me she will always be
The one who loved me unreservedly!

Webmaster: Great stuff, Nigel

Memorial Poem to Mum

by Valerie Overton-Davies
(Shropshire UK)

Funeral Poems for Family Members

I wrote this poem following the death of my dear Mum, Edna who passed away three years ago. She was my best friend and a wonderful mother to her four children. As she truly loved all the beauty that is around us all everyday, this was not a difficult poem to write - the words say it all, just how much she is missed.

Precious Gifts

I hear the blackbird singing
his song so pure and true,
he sings of days when you were here
I'm sure he's missed you too.

The beauty of the garden
remembers you the same,
the whispering trees, with falling leaves
forever call your name.

The flowers you carefully planted
enrich our lives each year,
they too recall your gentle touch,
like us, they've missed you here.

In fact it seems most everything
from earth to skies above,
reflect the joy you gave to us
wrapped up and sealed with love.

We thank you for these precious gifts
you chose to leave behind.
We'll treasure them forever more,
so gentle, pure and kind.

dear lord

by kayleigh orr
(amersham)

Funeral Poems for Family Members

I wrote this for my fiance family. They lost a loved one on Wednesday 6th October 2010 it was great sadness to all of us

Dear Lord hear our faithful prayer
Now he is with you, show him love and care
Let him in to heaven though the golden gate
Now life has been and had its fate
Please tell him he is always in our heart and mind
Because we can't believe we have lost someone so pure and kind
And please tell him we will be OK
We have cried a little but we think of him everyday

Beloved sister

by Chathu
(Sri Lanka)

Thinking of you
from the whole of my heart
I just remember
your rosy cheeks and
lovely red lips
we have grown up together
and the things we share
we joked,laugh and
even cried together
you were my sole friend.

My sister,
you taught me to laugh
when all the others cry,
you taught me to be honest
when others cheat

But today we have been far apart.
You're there and I'm somewhere here,
Although it is so
I have kept you in a special place of my heart
So that you are there
not only in my heat but also in my soul.

In Memory of Ann Mary Stenberg

by Deborrah Ann Stenberg
(Billings, Montana USA)

AS a wife to my father, Herbert Frank Stenberg, a grandmother to my children Chase and Brittney Plum, a daughter to Jerry and Ann Pospisil, a mother to me, Deborrah Ann Stenberg, and a very dear friend to so many who adored you. I praise you for your dedicated efforts. My heart has been shattered. I’m very lonely without you. Time has passed and I’ll never forget you. Missing you is naturally expected. I’m so sorry for all the pain you had tragically suffered. Your significance will be highlighted forever.

Our mothers adamantly teach us comfort, guidance, love and consideration with a notable decency to be upstanding human beings. In their profitable teaching, we also learn to choose and accept the directions we need to follow in order to be happy, safe and successful. Unfortunately, death can come upon us much too quickly, therefore, we should always appreciate all the people we like or love. Remember to honor and cherish those who are living and never forget the ones who are gone.

Years before your illnesses------

I had seen your strength
I had admired your ambition
I had heard your compassion from soft words spoken
I had observed your devotion and honored your success
Trying my best to encourage your talent.

I had always been proud of your notable achievements
And I’m so grateful for the person you were
Even though you’re gone, I know that you’re near me
Watching, helping, guiding, listening and protecting.
Protecting is what mothers excel at.

An Angel on Earth, now an Angel in Heaven
Both worlds have been blessed with your presence.

Golden days, precious moments, and treasured
memories. Thank you my dear mother for the gift
of yourself. Priceless will indicate your meaning.

Memorial Poem

by eileen
(barnsley england)

In Our Hearts

One year has passed since you went away

One year has passed since we saw your face

So we close our eyes and open our hearts

And yes there you are

Tucked in a corner all cosy and snug

Surrounded by all our love

Keeping our memories precious and safe

Until the day we meet again

Tribute to a Deceased Father

by MATT
(CORBY)

To a Dad, that in the beginning was hard and brash but in the end was a Dad I ALWAYS WANTED. Taken away by cancer

My Dad

In the early days when we were young
SOMEONE SHOUTS:
Here comes your Dad,we'd hide and run.

Back from the pub, you'd just been
With that starey look, you seemed so mean
And no loud noise within the house
Tippy toe-ing like a little dormouse
But times did change
And you became a pleasant fellow
Funny and chatty and quite mellow
A Dad we could love
Different from the past
But all good things NEVER last
Disaster struck and you became quite ill
Taking and trying every sort of pill
Just to stay with us a little longer
Mum right there to make you stronger
A battle fought tooth and nail
But no happy ending like a fairy tale
You fell asleep with no more pain
Our teardrops fell like pouring rain
One true Dad our best friend
I'd have wished for more years and not this quick end
We all miss you Dad you are the best
We are so sad but you're now at rest
So cheerio from us all and your loving WIFE
Till we all meet again in the afterlife xx

Poem for Funeral Flowers

by corrinna turner
(united kingdom)

I wrote this for my mum when her mum passed away a couple of weeks ago, as my mum's mother hasn't been in her life for 18 years or so, she struggled to find the right words to put on the funeral flower card.

As Time Goes By

As time goes by, people fall apart,
But you are always in my heart.

In Remembrance of Dad

by Maureen Brow
(West Yorkshire)

I wrote this poem on the first anniversary of my fathers death 15 years ago:

A Place In My Heart

There's a place in my heart no-one can fill
For a father I loved and always will.
The day that you died dad my heart broke in two
And one piece went to heaven with you.

So God treat him kindly for he was the best
Of the stars up in heaven he outshines the rest.
Tell him one day I'll join him when my days are through
So my broken heart can be put back in two.

Wife Memorial Poem

by kathleen gallagher
(Bolton uk)

A rose for you

My poem is about a friend of mine who lost his wife through cancer and he had planted a rose bush and put her ashes in the base of the plant. It didnt grow for a long time then all of a sudden one morning he noticed it just suddenly started showing buds and within a week there was a beautiful red rose. It made him feel his wife was around him, to comfort him.

I look out of the window,
and see the first buds of bloom,

the tears start to flow,
as I sit in this cold and empty room,

as I sit I remember youre beautiful face,
you dressed so fine, and walked with such grace,

Every morning I sit and stare,
as the buds get bigger,
and I feel that you're there,

then one morning, as I took a glance,
I knew then that I had a chance,

I had a chance to get through,
the days without you,

The most beautiful rose with tears of dew,
I knew it was for me,
It was sent by you.

Poem for Headstone

by karen jones
(leicester,england)

My brother died in a car crash in 1994 at the age of 26. I couldn't find anything to suit the bubbly live wire person he was so I wrote my own. This verse was put on his headstone.

Golden Smile

A million times we've wished you back,
But it was not to be,
Your golden smile we'll always treasure,
But can no longer see,
We know that the world we live in,
Can be trouble and strife,
So we hope you'll always be happy,
In your world of eternal life.
