The Brightest Star In The Sky

Poems About Loss of Loved Ones

When Mum died last year, we explained to my grandson (Reece, 3 years old) that his Nana had gone to be a star in the sky. On the eve of her funeral there was a massive, really bright star above my house and I'd pointed it out to my grandson and told him "that's Nana's star, the brightest star in the sky. Now all of Mum's great grandkids and grandkids refer to Mum as the brightest star in the sky. My daughter even had it tattoo'd on her hip with small stars and one larger star around the words and she named a star after Mum too. As I say, my grandson was only 3 years old, but loved his Nana and she adored him. We also scattered her ashes on a beach and Reece calls it "Nana's beach". Here goes...

At night I watch you twinkling
Twinkling from the sky above
It looks like you are happy
And sending me your love

And on the special days
We go to Nana's beach
It's a special place
Where you're within my reach

At night when the moon is out
And the sky is clear
I can see my Nana shining
Saying "Goodnight dear"

I know that star's my Nana
And if you ask me why
I'll point her out and tell you
She's the "Brightest Star In the Sky"

I'll always miss you but I've let you go

by susan young
(east kilbride, Scotland)

My Mum died on 25th July 2009. As I am the youngest girl of 8 children, she was worried about me and how I'd deal with her death. I didn't deal with it very well until I found a poem in with her insurance documents. It was a well known poem called "Miss me but let me go" (By Betty Miller) and it helped me mentally. This poem I wrote was a kind of reply to the one she left.

I'll always miss you but I've let you go,
In my broken heart I'll always keep you so,
We shared a special night before you died,
A night that helped me dry the tears I've cried,
You've healed me from your cloud above,
I can't see you now but I'll always feel your love,
The hardest thing was "never ever",
But the memories I have will last forever,
So sleep wee mammy, rest in peace,
Your baby girl is more at ease.

Loss of Mom Poem

by Catherine
(Ireland)

Mom

The year has come and gone so fast,
My memories will last & last,
I still shed a tear, it still hurts so much,
But I can just close my eyes and still feel your touch,
I think about you all the time,
I'll miss you forever, you'll always be mine.

goodnight nan poem

by hayley
(england)

Peacefully sleeping, resting at last
The world's weary trouble and trials are past,
In silence she suffered, in patience she bore
Till God called her home, to suffer no more
