A Father means so many things...
An understanding heart,
A source of strength and of support
Right from the very start.

A constant readiness to help
In a kind and thoughtful way.
With encouragement and forgiveness
No matter what comes your way.

A special generosity
And always affection, too
A Father means so many things
When he's a man like you...

I find myself wondering...
Did I give you your due..
For all that you've done for me
Did I?ever thank you?

For all of my childhood memories
For helping me deal with life's stresses
For helping me?accept my defeats
And celebrate my successes?

Or for teaching me the value of hard work,
Good judgement, courage, and being true
The laughter, smiles, and quiet times we've shared
Did I ever thank you??

If I have forgotten, I'm thanking you now
You taught me right from wrong....
I hope you know how much you're loved and appreciated
I hope you,?instinctively, knew it all along.

Happy Fathers' Day, Dad

The History of Fathers Day Card Poems Verses Quotes

In 1909, in Spokane, Washington, Sonora Smart Dodd was listening to a Mother's Day sermon. The lecture inspired her to have a special day dedicated to her father, William Jackson Smart, who had brought her up and her siblings single-handedly after their mother died. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day on the petition sent to him by Dodd. In 1926, a National Father's Day Committee was formed in New York City.
However, it was thirty years later that a Joint Resolution of Congress gave recognition to Father's Day. Another 16 years passed before President Richard Nixon established the third Sunday of June as a permanent national observance day of Father's Day in 1972 .

I know how often I took you for granted
When I was growing up back then.
I always assumed you'd be there
When...
?...?I needed you

And you always were.
But I never really thought about what that meant
Till I got older and began to realise
How?much time and energy?you spent....

Devoted to me...
So, for all the times I didn't say it before,
Thank you, Dad....I love you so very much...
From your...

Fabulous Fathers Day card By Jak, the card making maestro at Imag-e-nati

_________________________________

He's rough and lacks in etiquette,
Society would say.
He has no classy attributes,
To help him on his way.

He's not a fancy dresser,
And he's not so trimmed and neat.
With simple clothes and simple shoes,
He wears upon his feet.

He doesn't belong to a club,
Or drive a shiny car.
And when he takes vacations,
He does not go very far.

He doesn't dine on fine cuisine,
To him fast food's a treat.
And he may use a plastic fork,
When it is time to eat.

He has a modest little house,
But has all that he needs.
He keeps his lawn cut nice and short,
He even trims his weeds.

He works long hours at his job,
To make an average pay.
And even if he's sick or tired,
He goes to work each day.

His job is just a factory job,
His pay just makes ends meet.
But, a few good friends and family,
Make his life complete.

He's not well versed in poetry,
Theater or the arts.
And wisdom is not something,
That he constantly imparts.

He loves the simple things in life,
For riches doesn't thirst.
He knows what is important,
And his family is put first.

The wealth that God has given him,
To treasure in his life.
A loving son and daughter,
And a very special wife.

He never has much money,
And his life is not a show.
But he is still the richest man,
That I will ever know.

To others he's a simple man,
And fame he's never had.
But he's the greatest man I know,
He also is my Dad.

A Dad is a person
who is loving and kind,
And often he knows
what you have on your mind.

He's someone who listens,
suggests, and defends ~
A dad can be one
of your very best friends!

He's proud of your triumphs,
but when things go wrong,
A dad can be patient
and helpful and strong.

In all that you do,
a dad's love plays a part ~
There's always a place for him
deep in your heart.

And each year that passes,
you're even more glad,
More grateful and proud
just to call him your dad!

Thank you, Dad ...
for listening and caring,
for giving and sharing,
but, especially, for just being you!

Happy Father's Day

?When I was ... Four years old: My daddy can do anything.
Five years old: My daddy knows a whole lot.
Six years old: My dad is smarter than your dad.
Eight years old: My dad doesn't know exactly everything.
Ten years old: In the olden days, when my dad grew up, things were sure different. Twelve years old: Oh, well, naturally, Dad doesn't know anything about that. He is too old to remember his childhood.
Fourteen years old: Don't pay any attention to my dad. He is so old-fashioned. Twenty-one years old: Him? My Lord, he's hopelessly out of date.
Twenty-five years old: Dad knows about it, but then he should,
because he has been around so long.
Thirty years old: Maybe we should ask Dad what he thinks. After all, he's had a lot of experience.
Thirty-five years old: I'm not doing a single thing until I talk to Dad.
Forty years old: I wonder how Dad will handle it. He is so wise.
Fifty years old: I'd give anything if Dad were here now so I could talk this over with him. Too bad I didn't appreciate how smart he was. I could have learned a lot from him.

More Father's Day Poems than you can shake a stick at

__________________________________________________________

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it ... Dad

My Dad and I

My dad and I-we think alike,
He knows just what I mean
Before I even say a word
He reads, well, in between.

My dad and I-we like to fish
Or build a model plane,

Or fix a broken chair or two
Or just a windowpane.

My dad and I-we know the score
Of every single game;
Sometimes he's really busy, too
But he takes me just the same.

My dad and I-we go swimming too,
Each year and sometimes twice.
My dad and I-we do everything;
My dad-he's really nice.

Fathers Day poem by Phyllis C. Michael

Over the years
As we grow old,
We remember our father
So brave and bold.

In the garden,
Leaning on the plow,
He would listen to me;
I see him now.

He would give advice
And understand;
He was always there
To lend a hand.

God made fathers
Strong and firm,
For he knew our lives
Would have great concerns.

So he gave us fathers
To teach us to pray,
And guide our lives,
And show us the way.

So on his day
Let's take the time
To say "Thanks, dad.
I'm glad you're mine."

Fathers Day poem by Mary Frances Bogle

A little girl needs Daddy
For many, many things:
Like holding her high off the ground
Where the sunlight sings!
Like being the deep music
That tells her all is right
When she awakens frantic with
The terrors of the night.

Like being the great mountain
That rises in her heart
And shows her how she might get home
When all else falls apart.

Like giving her the love
That is her sea and air,
So diving deep or soaring high
She'll always find him there.?

Daddy, I love you
For all that you do.
I'll kiss you and hug you
'Cause you love me, too.

You feed me and need me
To teach you to play,
So smile 'cause I love you
On this Father's Day.

Lots of Father's Day Poems and Verses to follow

------------------------------------------------------

Fathers can be solitary mountains,
All their love rock-like, steep, and strong.
Though warm and caring, somehow they belong
Halfway home to mothers' bubbling fountains.
Each of us needs love that knows no quarter,
Reminding us of bonds that cross a border,
Strengthening our sense of right and wrong.

_________________________

Fathers need not fathers be.
All one needs to do is choose
To love for life, and that embrace,
Held long and hard, bestows the grace
Each craves. For all in time must lose,
Restored alone by memory.
So now it is with you and me.

Grandfathers are fathers who are grand,
Restoring the sense that our most precious things
Are those that do not change much over time.
No love of childhood is more sublime,
Demanding little, giving on demand,
Far more inclined than most to grant the wings
Allowing us to reach enchanted lands.
Though grandfathers must serve as second fathers,
Helping out with young and restless hearts,
Each has all the patience wisdom brings,
Remembering our passions more than others,
Soothing us with old and well-honed arts.?

To my dad on his day,
Of whom I am a living will:
May your happiness fulfill
Your goodness, as is just and right.
Deeds are seeds upon the night
As wind and wonder have their way,
Delivering the destined light.

Though time has changed your handsome grip,
Your hair is snowy white,
You gait's a little slower now,
Thick glasses help your sight.

Oh, do I thirst for years gone by,
To be that growing lad,
Re-living all of the memories,
Of growing with my dad.

Fathers Day Quotes

By the time a man realizes that maybe his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he's wrong. -Charles Wadsworth

?When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.? - Mark Twain

"The older I get, the smarter my father seems to get." - Tim Russert?

"It doesn't matter who my father was; it matters who I remember he was." - Anne Sexton

The greatest gift I ever had
Came from God, and I call him Dad!"

Small boys become big men through the influence of big men who care about small boys.

?
Bedtime came, we were settling down,
I was holding one of my lads.
As I grasped him so tight, I saw a strange sight:
My hands. . .they looked like my dad's!
I remember them well, those old gnarled hooks,
there was always a cracked nail or two.
And thanks to a hammer that strayed from its mark,
his thumb was a beautiful blue!
They were rough, I remember, incredibly tough,
as strong as a carpenter's vice.
But holding a scared little boy at night,
they seemed to me awfully nice!
The sight of those hands - how impressive it was
in the eyes of his little boy.
Other dads' hands were cleaner, it seemed
(the effects of their office employ).
I gave little thought in my formative years
of the reason for Dad's raspy mitts:
The love in the toil, the dirt and the oil,
rusty plumbing that gave those hands fits!
Thinking back, misty-eyed, and thinking ahead,
when one day my time is done.
The torch of love in my own wrinkled hands
will pass on to the hands of my son.
I don't mind the bruises, the scars here and there
or the hammer that just seemed to slip.
I want most of all when my son takes my hand,
to feel that love lies in the grip
.
A Fathers Day poem / verse by David Kettler

When I was just a tiny kid,
Do you remember when,
The time you kissed my bruises,
Or cleaned by soiled chin?

You scrambled for the balls I hit,
(Short-winded more than not,)
Yet, every time we'd play a game,
You praised the "outs" I caught.

It seems like only yesterday,
You wiped away my tears,
And late at night I called your name,
To chase away my fears.

Here's some tips on writing your own Father's Day verses .. poems where you will also find a few more actual verses you could use

D.I.Y. VERSES..POEMS

Some useful rhyming words for Dad

mad, bad, lad, glad, sad, had

example template

You were always there as I grew up
________2nd line_____________
________?3rd line?____________
I'm so proud that you're my Dad

Suggested second lines

You taught me good from bad
Through the good times and the bad
Through the happy times, and sad
And even though you're barking mad
And, as you know, I was a bit of a lad
And sometimes you got hopping mad
And I'm so very glad
What great taste, my Mum had

The third line doesn't need to rhyme so can be anything

eg:-You were my rock to lean on
??????? It's no wonder that I love you
??????? And completely off your trolley
??????? In the lottery of life, I got the best
?????? You're the very bestest in the world
?????? So, Mr. (John William Smith) of ( Consett)
?????? She chose you for a husband

So, picking and mixing, you can have, for example:-

You were always there as?I grew up
You taught me good from bad
You were my rock to lean on
I'm so proud that you're my Dad

or

You were always there as I grew up
And even though you're barking mad
And completely off your trolley
I'm so proud that you're my Dad

Another useful template for Fathers Day is

____any first line____
This card is sent to say
____any third line___
On this your special day

So, for example:-

Dad, you're my Superhero
This card is sent to say
Go to the pub and sup some ale
On your very special day

or

Dad, you need to relax, you're looking stressed
So this card is sent to say
I'll try to get out of the house for a while
To help you enjoy your day

or

Grandfather, Grandpappy, Gramps or Grandpa
This card is sent to say
Whatever the word, you're the best, Grandad
Enjoy your special day
